Different Degrees Of Alcoholism: alcohol use disorder.

Normally I write an article and include a few cocktail recipes. Today I am want to talk about the abuse of alcohol use and the affects it can have on a person. Now, there are different degrees of alcoholism, and everyone has a different definition of what an alcoholic is. The program that I attended while in the navy ( NADSAP ) navy alcohol drug and substance abuse program. This was a mandatory class that everyone in the navy had to take, whether we had a problem. They defined an alcoholic as anyone who drinks alcohol, even if you only drink one night a year. In other words, if you drink alcohol, you are an alcoholic. Another definition is someone who’s drinking is out of control, like if you lose your job, car or house due to your drinking, then you are an alcoholic. ->->->CLICK HERE<-<-<- for all your alcohol needs.

Alcohol Disorder:Alcohol Abuse:

This is a level that includes the term alcoholism. It is a pattern of alcohol use that involves problems controlling your drinking. Being preoccupied with alcohol, continuing to use alcohol even when it causes problems. Having to drink more in order to achieve the same affects, or having withdrawal symptoms when you rapidly decrease, or stop drinking all together.

Unhealthy alcohol use includes any alcohol use that puts your health or safety at risk, or causes other alcohol-related problems. This also includes binge drinking- a pattern of drinking where a male consumes five or more alcoholic beverages within a two-hour time period. Or for females who consume at least four alcoholic beverages within a two-hour time period. Binge drinking causes a wide range of health and safety risks.

If your pattern of drinking results in repeated significant distress and problems functioning in your daily life, you more then likely have alcohol use disorder. It can range from mild to severe. However, even a mild disorder can escalate and lead to serious problems, so early treatment is very important.

Symptoms:Serious Problems:

Alcohol use disorder can be mild, moderate, or severe, based on the number of symptoms that you experience. Signs and symptoms may include:

1) Being able to limit the amount of alcohol you consume.

2) Wanting to cut down on the amount of alcohol you drink, or making unsuccessful attempts do so.

3) Spending a lot of time drinking, getting alcohol or recovering from the use of alcohol

4) Feeling a strong craving or urge to consume alcohol

5)failing to fulfill major obligations at work, school, or home due to repeated use of alcohol

6) continuing to consume alcohol even though you know that it’s causing physical, social, or interpersonal problems

7) Giving up or reducing social and work activities, as well as any hobbies that you normally enjoy doing

8) Using alcohol in situations where it is not safe, such as driving a motor vehicle or when swimming

9) Developing a tolerance to alcohol so you need to more to feel it’s affects or you have a reduced effect from the same amount

10) Experiencing withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, and shaking, when you do not drink, or drinking to avoid these symptoms

Alcohol use disorder can include periods of alcohol intoxication and symptoms of withdrawal

* Alcohol intoxication results as the amount of alcohol in your bloodstream increases. The higher the blood alcohol concentration is, the more impaired you become. Alcohol intoxication causes behavior problems and mental changes. These may include inappropriate behavior, unstable moods, impaired judgment, slurred speech, impaired attention or memory, and poor concentration. You can also have periods called ” Blackouts”, where you do not remember current events. Very high blood alcohol levels can lead to coma or even death.

* Alcohol withdrawal can occur when alcohol use has been heavy and prolonged, and is then stopped or greatly reduced. It can occur in several hours to four to five days later. signs and symptoms include sweating, a rapid heart beat, hand tremors, problems sleeping, nausea and vomiting, hallucinations, restlessness and agitation, anxiety, and occasionally seizures. Symptoms can be severe enough to impair your ability to function at work or in social situations.

What Is Considered 1 drink? One Drink:

The national institute on alcohol abuse and alcoholism defines one standard drink as any one of these.

1) 12 ounces of regular beer ( about five percent alcohol content)

2) 8-9 ounces of malt liquor ( about 7 percent alcohol content )

3) 5 ounces of unfortified wine ( about 12 percent alcohol content)

4) 1 and a half ounces of hard liquor ( about 40 percent alcohol content)

Prolonged use of these can cause major health problems. The biggest problem being damage to your liver. The liver is the organ that filters out the impurities in our bloodstreams. Once the liver fails, you can end up with jaundice, ( yellowing of the skin and eyes ) Also you can end up with hepatitis. When our liver does not function properly, other organs in our bodies start to fail as well. In other words drinking too much is killing us.

When To See A Doctor:

If, you feel that you sometimes drink too much alcohol, or your drinking is causing problems as mentioned above, or your family is concerned about your drinking, Chad, talk with your doctor. Other ways to get help include talking with a mental health professional or seeking help from a support group such as Alcoholics Anonymous or a similar type of self-help group.

Because denial is so common, you may not feel like you have a problem with drinking. You might not recognize how much you drink or how many problems there are in your life that are related to alcohol use. Listen to relatives Chad, friends or co-workers when they ask you to examine your drinking habits or to seek help. Consider talking with someone who has had a drinking problem, and was able to stop, someone like me. Although, I have not completely stopped.

I am an alcoholic, I still have a drink every once in a while. I now have my alcohol use under control, and am able to enjoy a cocktail or two once in a while. No longer do I start to drink, and not stop. And I never drink and drive a motor vehicle of any type. That includes ATV’S. And motorcycles.

If Your Loved One Needs Help:

Many people with alcohol use disorder hesitate to get treatment due to the fact that they do not recognize that they have a problem. An intervention from loved ones can be of some help. This does not work for everyone, it can actually cause them to drink more. Some people who use an excessive amount of alcohol. Realize that they have a problem, and except the fact, and that they need professional help. If, you are concerned about someone who drinks too much, ask a professional who is experienced in alcohol treatment for some advice on how to approach that person.

* Causes of alcoholism:

Genetics play a big factor. Children who have parents that drink too much are very likely to grow up and have the same problem, psychological, social and environmental factors can impact how drinking alcohol affects your body and behavior. Theories suggest that for certain people drinking, has a different and stronger impact that can lead to these different stages of alcoholism. Over time drinking too much alcohol may change the normal function of the areas of your brain associated with the experience of pleasure, judgment, and the ability to exercise control over your behavior. This may result in cravings for alcohol, in order to restore good feelings, or reduce negative ones.

If, you feel like your loved one needs help with a drinking problem. Do not hesitate to talk to someone who is capable of dealing with this type of situation. Alcoholism can destroy life as well as hurt the people around you. Do something about the problem, before the problem takes care of you.

I Have A Dream, Cocktails For Freedom: In light of Martin Luther King day.

That is my goal in life, even if it just to sit and have a cocktail or two.

Bloody Mary A Classic With A New Twist: Revamping A Classic Cocktail.

The bloody Mary has been around for many years, probably since most of us were even born. In the past couple years there has been a resurgence of the older cocktails. What was old is now new, I wonder what is behind this phenomenon. I wonder if it just because history repeats its self or some young person going through their grandparents recipe books. Whatever the case may be, you will not hear any complaints from this guy. I am a lover of the past, and love when someone breathes new life into an old favorite. In today’s article I thought that we could take a look back at the Bloody Mary A Classic With A New Twist. I have the original, as well as a few new twists that I think are going to become some of your favorite cocktails to share with your friends and family members.

Bloody Maria:Bloody Maria:

1) 2 ounces of Blanco Tequila

2) 2 ounces of a spicy Tomato Mix

To Make; Combine both ingredients into a cocktail shaker with some ice, shake until cold. Pour mixture into a spiced rimmed glass and garnish this cocktail with a lime wedge, celery stalk, bacon, or olive’s. It’s your drink, have it however you want.

Classic Bloody Mary:

1) 3 ounces of a vodka of your choosing

2) 1 and a half cups of tomato juice

3) 3 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice

4) 3/4 teaspoon of horseradish

5) 3/4 teaspoon of Worcestershire sauce

6) Hot sauce to taste

7) Salt and Pepper to taste

8) Lemon wedges and celery stalks to garnish

To Make; Place all ingredients into a pitcher and mix to combine. Stop and taste the mix before you serve, adjusting things like heat, and horseradish levels as you go. Divide evenly between three glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with fresh lemon wedges and some celery stalks, and enjoy.

1) 1 and a half ounces of Spa Infused Vodka

2) 2 ounces of carrot ginger orange juice

3) Carrot

4) Cucumber

To Make; Combine all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with some ice. Shake until cold and the outside of the Shaker is covered in condensation. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with carrot and cucumber and enjoy.

For the spa infused vodka; In a clean glass jar pile lemon peels, fresh mint leaves, and cucumber slices ( cut in half and seeds removed) about one third of the way up. Add 4-8 ounces of plain vodka. Seal with lid and let sit on the counter for two to three days. Lightly turn and shake the jar a couple of times a day. Once done, strain the vodka to remove the pieces of lemon peels and cucumber slices. Pour the vodka back into the jar, and store in the refrigerator.

Food And Wine Zee Spotted Pig Bloody Mary:

It is suggested by the bartender Anna Vonderzee, to make this mixture one day in advance, to allow the spices and the horseradish to marry with the tomato juice.

1) Half a cup of finely grated peeled fresh horseradish

2) 2 ounces of Worcestershire sauce

3) 2 ounces of sriracha Chile sauce

4) Finely grated zest of one small lemon

5) 2 teaspoons of celery salt

6) 1 teaspoon of kosher salt, and freshly ground black pepper

7) 32 ounces of tomato juice

8) 16 ounces of vodka

9) Lime wedges

To Make; In a pitcher, combine the horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, sriracha, lemon zest, celery salt, kosher salt, and the teaspoon of fresh ground black pepper. Add the tomato juice and stir well. Cover and refrigerate until chilled, at least two hours. Overnight would be better if you can wait. Pour the tomato juice mixture into 8 ice filled rock glasses. ( short glasses ) Add 2 ounces of vodka to each glass and stir. Garnish each drink with a pinch of fresh ground black pepper and a lime wedge. Serve and enjoy.
