Gin And Tonic The Breakfast Of Champions:

In today s topic, gin and tonic the breakfast of champions, I am going to tell a little story of how this cocktail came to be a breakfast drink for me. so please bear with me, all will be explained.

The Early Days:

I call this the early days for the fact that I was young pup serving our great nation in the United States Navy. I was stationed on the USS BELLEAU WOOD LHA 3. I believe that it was around 1989 at the time, if my memory serves me right. This is not the actual ship, but it gives you an idea of what an aircraft carrier is. The picture below resembles another ship I was on first. The USS MIDWAY. That is whole other story in its self, but I will save that for another time. For now, I will continue with our topic of today.

We were just pulling into Subic Bay, of the Philippine islands after being out to sea for a couple of months. So a few of the guys that I was friends with, decided that once liberty call was announced, we would go off ship for breakfast. We got a taxi cab, and went to the base enlisted personnel’s club. I had no idea of their breakfast in mind, and here I thought we going for some eggs and bacon. Boy was I wrong, I knew that I was in for one heck of a day when we bellied up to the bar. Still, I figured we were going to order food from the bar, but to my surprise, when they both asked the bartender for a gin and tonic. I heard some strange things, my first two years in the navy. But alcohol for breakfast, it was a good thing that my mother was  not alive. I had never even considered having a cocktail for breakfast, but I went along with them and ordered the exact same thing as they did.

What Is A Gin And Tonic:

Gin and tonic is a very simple drink. All you need is some good gin, and some tonic water ( carbonated water, sparkling water) and maybe some lime juice. Pour all ingredients into a mid sized glass over ice. And there you have it, a gin and tonic, the breakfast of champions.

Now we sat there at the enlisted club for several hours, just drinking and listening to country music. I suppose we were trying to get a little drunk before going out into the village of Subic bay.

The Village Of Subic Bay:

Oh the village of Subic bay, the stories that could be told about this place. We would be here all night and then some. I think in the four years that I was in the navy, I believe that I went to Subic Bay at least 13 times. To this day, I still can not figure out why we started drinking at the club on base. All the clubs in town served alcohol. And for a real inexpensive price. If I remember correctly, a bottle of San maguil beer was only .050 cents. Yes I said that right. A beer for fifty cents, I would not lie about this.

After all we were in the land of sin and fun. The only problem for me was trying not to run into my wife to be. As long as I avoided the far end of the street, everything would be just fine, That way I was able to continue to hang out with the guys, and party some more. So as long as I did not go anywhere near the club she worked in, I could party all night long. But eventually some time during the afternoon, me and the guys separated and went our own ways. So I sobered up a little, and headed to the end of the street. Besides, there only so many dancing girls that one man can handle in a day.

The End Of The Street:

By now I had enough of gin and tonic the breakfast of champions. All that I wanted to do, was go find the little woman who I was going to marry. However, I did not marry her. I told her that I had a child back home with another woman, and I had to do the right thing, and marry the woman I now call my wife. And have called her my wife for the past thirty years, come this September.

Once I told( Edna ) the Philippine girl this, she looked at me and said okay, now lets go home. By this time I had enough alcohol in me to put an elephant to sleep. So of course I went back to our apartment with her. After all I was paying fifty dollars a month for us live there. I know sounds like I’m lying, I can assure you, that is all I was paying to live there. This even included all the electricity, and running water indoors. We did have a shower outside. You know the enclosed ones with the vines climbing all over them. The picture of paradise.

The End:

Well friends we are at the end of another one of life stories. Okay you can laugh all you want, I don’t mind, because you are laughing with me. I sincerely hope that you found this article just a little entertaining. I honestly try not to bore the hell out of you. If you ever have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask me. I love questions. Now before I leave you, I want to remind you to always be careful. Please drink responsibly and never drink and drive. If I have said it once, I have said it a thousand times. I am so tied of going to funerals. The life that you save could be your own. Not only that, taking the life of someone else. Is something that you can never come back from.

Remember to drink responsibly and never drink and drive, the life you save may very well be your own.

Love always John D.  Have a blessed day my friends.
