Rum for cocktails:
I know, this sounds simple, rum for cocktails. We all know the more famous rum and coke. And that’s fine sometimes we just want to keep thing simple. When you use soda to mix your rum, you don’t have a need for a simple syrup. Which is just a mixture of sugar and water. That’s all soda is, sugar and carbonated water with flavoring. If you are like me, you probably started out with rum and coke. Let’s face it, coke hides the look of the rum, so nobody thinks that you have an alcoholic beverage. For me, coke is only good with a white rum, like Bacardi. Maybe you like it with a spiced rum, and that is perfectly fine. It is my opinion, that keeping the cocktail simple is the best way to drink it. I have never been one for designer drinks.
Now if you really want to keep it simple, let me make two suggestions. Number one, keep it neat. This just means to drink it straight, not mixed with anything. The second way that I have to keep it simple, is to have it over the rocks. This just a fancy way to say you have it over ice. I don’t know about you, but I prefer all of my rum cocktails to be served chilled. Unless of course you just want to do a shot. Then I’m always ready for that, especially if you are the one who is buying. Alright, we have got the simple way of having our rum cocktail. Now perhaps we should explore some fancy ways to enjoy our rum cocktail. So on to our first way to enjoy, and perhaps impress our friends and family.
BLACK BERRY MOJITO’S:
First you are going to need the following ingredients, 1.5 oz. Of a clear rum, 8 black berries, 1oz of simple syrup ( soda water ) 8 mint leaves, and one cup of ice. Like I said earlier, a cold livation is better than a warm one. Now that we have our ingredients for this rum cocktail, we need to assemble it.
So combine the mint, berries, lime wedges, rum, and your simple syrup in a glass of your choosing.( Muddle) in other words, crush or smash the ingredients. This is done to extract the juices from the mint leaves and the berries. Once you have completed this step, the final step is to pour the ice into the glass, and top off with your soda water. If you want to make it look pretty to impress everyone, garnish with more of the berries, mint leaves, or lime.wedges. Keep in mind, this makes one cocktail. Just double the recipe for two and so forth on.
TASTE THE ISLAND:
Since I am on the subject of how to enjoy some rum cocktails, I’ll give you one that I just tried myself while taking a short break. All you need is a shot of your favorite rum, I used a white rum, that’s what was in the liquor cabinet. Then you will need a bottle of calypso ocean blue lemonade. Add some ice to a tall glass, pour a shot glass of the rum over the ice. Get your sixteen oz. Of ocean blue calypso, and pour into the glass. Sit back and enjoy. I don’t have a name for this one yet, but give me a day or two, and I should be able to come up with something for you.
That’s one thing that I love to do, take an ordinary drink from the fridge, and add some kind of alcohol to it. You never know how it will come out. Sometimes you hit it out of the park, and sometimes you just fall flat. And of course if you have too much to drink, you can end up falling flat on your face. And this is never a good thing to have happen. Especially at my age. Falling down these days is always going to hurt. And I just don’t want to spend a night in my local hospital’s emergency room. For one, I can not afford the bill. For two, people check in, but they do not check out. A little hotel California for you there. You older readers will know what I am talking about, and if you don’t, you are probably too young to be here.
Experimenting with our rum cocktails, gives us some freedom. Not to mention a little of adventure. So don’t be shy or afraid to try something out of the ordinary. Go, get up, look in your refrigerator. See what you have stashed in there. Do not be afraid to try something different. You never know what you can end up with.
Maybe you have a pitcher of iced tea hanging out in the back of the refrigerator. I believe that rum is the main alcohol in a long Island iced tea. And who doesn’t like a good spiked ice tea.? All I am saying is that it does not hurt to be a little adventurous from time to time. You just have to keep in mind, that when you are trying different concoctions, about, will you need to make a simple syrup, or is what I’m going to add my rum to is sweet enough. Unless of course you are into sour drinks. Every cocktail that we make needs the right ratio of sweetness, or no one will want to have another one. I do not want you to be the laughingstock of your friends or family. Also in my opinion, every dinner party needs a good cocktail. Well I am just about done with this little story. I hope that you found something a little useful here today. And I pray that I have not bored you to hell and back. Being a God-fearing man that I am, I would never wish for you to go to hell.
I just want to thank you for stopping by and saying hello today. I’m going to end this post of rum for cocktails. I only have one last thing to say to you. Please always drink responsibly, and please never drink and drive. I am tired of going to friends funerals.
Thank you and God bless friends. John D.
