Today I would like to talk about the use of alcohol with diabetes, as well as the effects it has on the body. Please keep in mind that I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on TV.
WHAT IS DIBETES:
Diabetes is a disease, where the body can no longer produce insulin, or produce enough insulin. This causes the body to not be able to process sugar the way it is meant to do. There is two types of diabetes.
First, there is type one diabetes. Type one is where you develop diabetes at an early stage in life. Sometimes we are born with it. This is a lifetime journey with the disease.
Second is type two, this is when we develop the disease later in life. Usually as a result of our diet and the lack of exercise. Go figure we work all day, go home and have a nice relaxing drink, and our reward for this, is a nasty little disease called diabetes. Yes I said nasty, because of what this disease does to the body, in which it causes havoc on all the organs. And we have to constantly check and regulate the blood sugar levels. We will get into the effects later in this post. Next you probably want to know if you can use alcohol with diabetes. So I am going to answer this question for you, sit back grab a drink and relax while I answer you.
Use of alcohol with diabetes:
Can we use alcohol with diabetes, this is the big question for today, drum roll please, yes we can use alcohol with diabetes. We just have to be cautious, and use some restraint. What do I mean by restraint? Simple do not sit there and drink a twelve pack, have two or three.
Plus there are some changes that we can make that will allow us to enjoy the use of alcohol with diabetes. Let us touch base on two of those changes now. The first change we can make is switch to a light beer. Stop laughing, in today s market there are a lot of flavorful light beers available for purchase. The biggest thing we have to look out for is total net carbohydrates. Guess what, carbohydrates are in all the stuff we love to eat. You know, like bread products, rice, and also those nice sweet white wines that everyone loves to sip on at the end of a long day. However, there is good news. Like I said switching to light beer is a step in the right direction. For me, I have started drinking Michelob ultra. I find it to be a full-bodied beer, that is very refreshing. I am more than likely going to have one after I am done writing this article.
Red, Red Wine:
For those of us that enjoy a nice glass of wine with friends, at the end of a long day. Switching to a red wine verses a white wine is a better use of alcohol with diabetes. Me personally, I have always liked red wine over white wine. I have always felt that white wine is too dry for my taste. Plus red wine has more benefits for your health than white wine does. What benefits do you say?
First off red wine is rich in antioxidants, this is real good for the blood stream. It helps enrich the blood with oxygen. Red wine is also good for the cardiovascular health. Meaning that is good for the heart. And the best benefit of red wine is that it has fewer of those nasty little carbohydrates. Red wine also helps the blood vessels get oxygen rich blood throughout our bodies. Keeping the veins open can lower blood pressure, as well as help reduce the risk of having a heart attack. Trust me you do not want that. Take it from someone who has been there and done that. Alright it is getting close to quitting time. And I promised to talk about the effects of the use of alcohol with diabetes.
Affects diabetes has on the body:
Having diabetes has several effects on our bodies. I compiled a list for you, as of my knowledge. Remember I am not a doctor nor do I play one on TV.
1: diabetes causes issues with the eys, loss of site is possible if we are not careful with our sugar levels.
2: CAD ( coronary artery disease) Too much sugar in the blood stream causes clotting, and can lead to a heart attack.
3: abnormal sugar can cause problems with our livers, like we need that when we’e already causing that problem from drinking alcohol.
4: Kidney disease, Diabetes is known to shut down the kidneys. Then we have to go on dialysis. Nobody wants to go to a hospital a couple of days a week, and be hooked to a machine to filter out our kidneys.
5: Loss of limb, ( a leg, arm, or toes) usually it starts with the doctors removing one or more of your toes.
I’m sure that there are a whole slews of other problems that diabetes can cause. But this is not a medical site, after all this is a place for alcohol. I just wanted to inform you that we can use alcohol with diabetes. We just need to make a few changes.in our drinking habits
Don’t Worry Be Happy:
I don’t want you to worry about the use of alcohol with diabetes. If we do nothing but worry, we will never live. Life is more fun when we sit back and enjoy a cocktail or two now and then. Please remember every thing in this site are the views of the owner of the site. That is me. All that I want for you, my readers is to have some fun, and enjoy life as much you possibly can. Before I leave you I want to add, that if you have diabetes, and you decide to have a cocktail or two, you should consider eating something before or during your drinking. This will aid in low blood sugar, that can send you to the hospital.
As always please be safe out there, don’t drink and drive. Drink responsibly.
Love always: John D. And god bless.
